Amy and Dustin drove down from Grand Forks to do their engagement session during one of the largest snowfalls we had received all year. We shot in my dedicated studio space for the first half of the session, and then had them don their UND Hockey Jerseys to brave the snow for some truly unique and absolutely gorgeous shots in whiteout conditions.

Stephanie + Eric | Fargo Engagement Photography
Stephanie and Eric were looking for something a little bit more rustic then we could find in town. We opted to take a tour of the Sheyenne National Grasslands outside of Lisbon ND to make use of the epic scenery available there. The trees hadn’t quite startd turning, but we were able to find some isolated patches of color to add a little splash to their session.

I was absolutely flattered when Sarah called me earlier this year to photograph her wedding. I had met her when I photographed her sisters wedding at St. Ann Jochem church in Fargo a few years ago, and was looking forward to photograph her again. Given she and her fiance currently were living in Kansas, We had a very limited window of time to make the engagement shoot happen. Thankfully we were able to get a date set up and capture some truly breathtaking images in the Sheyenne National Grasslands.

Abraham + Hodan | Fargo Engagement Photography
I was contacted by Hodan’s friend a month before her engagement session and had some reservations, as I had never photographed an Islamic engagement celebration before and was unfamiliar with what was all involved. After meeting with both Hodan and her friend and understanding more about what they were looking for I happily accepted the assignment. Hodan and her bridesmaids were stunning. I met Abraham the day of the shoot, and we worked out everything with the group at a new location I had found a few weeks prior.

Amber and Michael are a lovely couple from Bismarck. Amber will be getting married at the church she grew up in outside of rural Harwood ND. She and Michael met at NDSU, so it was only fitting we spend some moments on the campus to capture some fantastic shots of the two of them. -
Rebecca + Richard | Engagement Session
Even though it required a 3 hour drive to Minneapolis, Rebecca and Rich’s engagement session was something I couldn’t miss! They had arranged for us to shoot from the rooftops of downtown Minneapolis, overlooking the city, which is impossible to turn down! We spent a some time overlooking downtown Minneapolis, and then worked our way along the old Mill for some extrordinary sunset light. I cant wait to work with this couple again for their wedding this fall!

Working with a Winter Engagement Sessions
Shooting an engagement session in the winter can be a bit of a tricky affair. Light can vanish in an instant. Snot flurrys and bitter cold can make a shoot less then ideal. But don’t let that disuade you from scheduling an engagement session in a winter month.Outdoor engagement sessions in the winter can provide you with some fantastic images, all it takes is a little patience and a little adventure.
Here are a few quick tips to make the most of your time outdoors.
-Don’t shy away from the elements or the season.
Embrace the conditions at hand. Have fun, play in the snow. Winter is a great time of yet, so enjoy it and make the most of the snow or holiday settings. Between Thanksgiving and new years many downtown areas will decorate for the holidays. Make the most of it!
-We’ll do the heavy lifting, your job is to stay pretty!
Unless we’re shooting in the great wide open, you are perfectly welcome to stay in your nice warm vehicle while we set up to shoot. Stay warm and out of the elements and we’ll be more then happy to make certain we’re ready to go so you can minimize your time in the elements and stay pretty while we work.
Location, Location, Location
Some things change in the winter, and some locations happen spontaneously.
Ducking into a sheltered area, like this bus stop, gives us an interesting location shot, while making use of the winter background. Thankfully, it was a heated stop, which enabled our clients to stay warm while making the most of an otherwise chilly day.
Some locations that may have worked in the summer may not work in the winter. As a rule of thumb if there’s a location you would like to use, just drop us a line and we’ll scout well ahead of time to make certain that the location you want to use is useable for the winter shoot.
Nothing ruins a moment more then discovering the perfect spot in the park has been closed off for three months and is covered under three feet of snow. We’ll make certain you’re taken care of!
Be Flexable, and Everything Will Turn Out Right!
Some times even the best laid plans can get thrown for a loop. Even with scouting, some locations may not be available. We may be hit with a winter storm that closes down a town center.A location may be holding a special event that we were unaware of, or some emergancy may happen that causes the best laid plans to quickly unravel.
DON’T PANIC
We have extensive experience dealing with the “weird stuff”, it’s not an issue. And if, for some reason we’re unable to get the shot you were hoping for, we are always happy to schedule a re-shoot at absolutely no charge! We rest unless you are absolutely thrilled with your images. If it takes more then one shoot, we’re more then happy to make certain you get exactly what you want from your engagement shoot.

Jodine & Brandon | Engagement Session
I photographed Jodine & Brandon on a misty May morning at Buffalo River State Park just outside of Dilworth Minnesota. The rain, a light spring speckling didn’t stop us from capturing some excellent shots among the trees and sprawling grasslands in the park.

Sarah + Josh | Engagement Session
I went to high school with both Sarah and Justin, and actually knew Sarah very well. I was so very happy to hear about her Engagement to Justin, and jumped at the chance to photograph their wedding. Justin was working as an actor at a theater in Tennesee, and only had a few days off to come up and shoot before their wedding in July.
We had a great session downtown, right during the golden hour with a fantastic clear sky and beautifull lighting. We worked till dusk and then finished up after dark in the studio.
